A friend once asked me why her dresser drawers had started sticking after less than a year, while the one she inherited from her mother, decades old, still opened smoothly. The answer was in the material, not the design. Her new dresser was built from particleboard with a wood veneer. Her mother’s was solid maple. Neither is automatically the wrong choice, but knowing the difference changes what you should expect and what you should be willing to pay for.

What solid wood actually means

Solid wood furniture is built from boards cut directly from a tree, joined together with techniques like dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, or dowels. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its life, which is why older solid wood pieces can be restored to look almost new decades later. It also expands and contracts slightly with humidity, which is why well built solid wood furniture leaves room for that movement in how drawers and panels are joined.

Not everything sold as wood furniture is solid all the way through. Many pieces use solid wood for legs and frames, where strength matters most, and a different material for wide flat surfaces like tabletops or drawer fronts, where solid wood is more likely to warp. This is a reasonable compromise, not a shortcut, as long as it is disclosed clearly.

What engineered wood actually means

Engineered wood covers a range of materials, including plywood, medium density fiberboard, and particleboard, each with different strength and durability. Plywood is made from thin layers of real wood glued in alternating directions, which makes it quite strong and resistant to warping. Particleboard is made from wood particles and resin pressed into sheets, and it is generally the least durable of the three, especially around screws and hinges that get used repeatedly.

Medium density fiberboard sits in between. It takes paint and veneer well and holds a smooth, consistent surface, which is why it shows up often in painted furniture and flat pack pieces. It does not hold up as well to moisture or repeated stress at joints as plywood does.

How to tell what you are actually looking at

Look at any exposed edge, like the back of a drawer or the underside of a shelf. Solid wood shows a continuous grain pattern that runs through the entire thickness of the piece. Plywood shows visible layers, like a striped edge. Particleboard and fiberboard show a more uniform, speckled or fine texture with no visible grain at all, sometimes covered by a thin strip of edge banding to hide it.

Weight is another clue, though an imperfect one. Solid wood and plywood tend to be heavier for their size than particleboard, though the difference is not always dramatic enough to rely on alone. I always check the drawer construction specifically. Drawers with dovetail joints, where the wood pieces interlock like puzzle pieces, are a strong sign of solid wood or high quality plywood construction. Drawers held together with staples or glued butt joints are far more common in particleboard furniture.

When each material makes sense

I do not think solid wood is always the right answer. A dresser I plan to keep for twenty years, move between homes, and pass down eventually is worth building from solid wood or high grade plywood. A bookshelf I am buying for a short term apartment, or a piece that will live in a low traffic guest room, does not need that level of investment.

The question is not which material is better. It is which material matches how long you expect to keep the piece and how hard it will be used.

What actually shortens a piece’s life

In my experience, moisture is the real enemy of engineered wood furniture, more than everyday use. Particleboard swells and loses strength when it gets wet, which is why it fails faster in bathrooms, near windows that sweat in winter, or in a kitchen near a sink. Solid wood can also warp with moisture, but it generally recovers better and can be sanded down if a surface does swell slightly.

My friend’s dresser, the one with the sticking drawers, was sitting a few feet from a window that collected condensation every winter. Moving it across the room and drying it out helped more than she expected. The lesson was not that her dresser was poorly made for its price. It was that the material had a specific weakness she had not accounted for when she chose where to put it.

Veneer is not the same thing as a lie

A wood veneer is a thin layer of real wood glued over a core of plywood or fiberboard. Used well, it lets a piece show real wood grain on its visible surfaces while keeping weight and cost lower than solid wood throughout. The problem is not veneer itself, but veneer that is too thin to ever sand or repair, or veneer applied over a core so weak that the surface bubbles or peels within a few years.

I check the edges of veneered pieces for any lifting or bubbling before buying, and I ask how thick the veneer layer is if the seller knows. A veneer thick enough to be lightly sanded once, if it ever gets a scratch, will hold up far better over time than one so thin it can be damaged by a single deep scuff.

Joinery tells you more than the wood itself

Even solid wood furniture can be poorly built if the joints are weak. I look at how legs attach to a tabletop or a seat frame, since a leg attached with a single screw into end grain will loosen faster than one reinforced with a corner block or a mortise and tenon joint. Good joinery in solid wood and mediocre joinery in solid wood can result in very different lifespans for furniture built from the exact same material.
